The simplest definition is how much difference is the weight of two objects of the same size. A liter container of pure water weighing 1 kilogram is the reference point, with a density of 1.0 kilogram per liter. A liter of air weighs almost nothing and has a density much less than one. The same liter measure filled with iron weighs much more and has a density of ??? (if you're a physics teacher, you can probably find it faster than I can). You can also point out that things with a density less than 1 kg per liter will float and things with a higher density will sink.

You can also say you use density in everyday life like swimming.

I know it sounds confusing though. But it's rather clever

Density is how much "stuff" is inside something. A piece of styrofoam is not as dense as a Bowling ball because the styrofoam has lots of air bubbles in it and the ball is solid. Collect different materials and let them pick them up and see how they compare.

Start with Solid objects of a similar size but different density's (a bar of lead and a pencil or something similar). They will feel that one is heavier than the other. Ask them why one is heavier, get them thinking, then tell them there's more stuff in the same space in the lead, and that is density.

To transpose this to liquids fill a jar 1/2 full with Vegitable oil. Explain that oil is less dense than water, let them guess what will happen when you put water in the jar. Then put the water in the jar and it will 'Sink' through the oil.

explaining in just words might not be enough, but you can try using the punch line from the first paragraph

The general tendency is for a liquid to have more volume (and therefore less density) than a solid, and for a gas to have more volume (less density) than a liquid.

There are exceptions, however; notably water, which uses up MORE space instead of less when it freezes to ice.

Density equals weight divided by volume. Typical units of density would be grams per cubic centimeter.

Why shouldn't it? There isn't a direct relationship between density and size in general.
