If the deceased person left a will and your child was named as a benficiary, the executor of the estate would have been required to notify everyone named in the will of the terms of that will. This would include your child, or possible you as the child's legal representative. If you believe your child should inherit because the deceased was a parent, but there was no will or your child was not named in a will, you would probably be best served by contacting legal aid in your area to ask what the process is in your jurisdiction for filing a claim against the estate in the probate court.

Determination of Heirs

IF your father left a valid will, then it will determine who is an heir, and the distribution of his assets.

If there is no will, or it cannot be found, then the Probate [sometimes called "Succession"] law of the state in which he lived will determine the distribution of his assets.

Check the records in the probate court in his jurisdiction. If his estate was probated the will is available for review. You could request the file at the probate court, read the will and make a copy for your records. If the will was probated you should receive notice if you are a beneficiary.
