You remove the bolts, take off the old one and bolt on the new one.

My uncle had a 1992 sunbird and in order to change the starter on that one you had to take the front axle off and drop the starter out from the bottom because of the frame and cross over bars. Not sure if 89 would be exactly the same.

My daughter had one of those front drive cars. Rather than spend a lot of time on my back, I removed the head to get at it from above. I took the head in for service and wound up with a better car.

apparently the first person has no idea about the 89 turbos, the starter is under the multi port intake under the right side near the firewall, not a good take off bolt, replace job. I TOO would like to know from the gurus out here, do you take the passenger side wheel and axel off to get to the starter? Engine only has 52K Miles. Do not wish to remove anything i do not have to. Thanks!

I replaced the starter not too long ago in my '91, V8 305. I don't know if you have a different engine but maybe you can at least get some help out of this. First of all, disconnect the battery. The starter is hooked up straight to the battery, and although 12volts DC probably won't kill you, it doesn't feel too good. Now find the starter. It's going to be found underneath the car, (you'll have to jack it up and get under it. Use jackstands!) at the bottom of the engine by the front is the flywheel. The starter should be right by the flywheel, since it's job is to start cranking it. It should be bolted in place and covering the area where the flywheel is. There is a brace held on with two bolts, and the starter itself is bolted onto the engine by 2 or three long bolts going upwards. Just unbolt these and it should drop right down, (carefull not to drop it on your face! >:o ) It might take some wiggling to get it all the way out of there anyway, If i remember correctly I think the exhaust pipes coming from the engine were in the way a little. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is right above those exhaust pipes. Well like I said, I have a V8 305, so it might be in a different spot, but once you find the thing, it's very easy just to unbolt it. Oh! very important. When you disconnect the wires from the starter, be sure to label them so you know how to hook up the new one. draw a sketch if you have to, so you know which wire goes on which connection. Then install the new one just the oposite. Well . email if you have a question.

1. Remove the hot wire from the battery. Move it to the side of the battery were it will not hit anything. 2. Remove the Wire in front of the starter (the starter is at the back of the engine on the bottem side on the passenger side). 3. Remove the 3 bolts (they are the 3 bigest bolts)on the starter. The starter should fall off at this time if not just pull it off. The 3 bolt go thur the starter into the transmission.

To put it back in do the reverse and start with 3 and go to 1.

Always remove ground wire. If the hot wire accidently finds power, even a little, watch out. The ground will have more trouble finding a GOOD ground.

Jack the front end up so u have room. Disconnect the battery cables. There should be a plastic cover under part of the starter take that off. I believe there are three bolts. Disconnect the cable and tape all the wires that go together, together so there are no mistakes. Just hold the starter up and loosen the bolts(most likely you will need a breaker bar). drop the starter put new one in place bolt back and bolt all wires to proper placment. Make sure you get all bolts started before tightening them. Then start it up

The ignition lock switch? (lock cylinder & keys) Remove the horn pad, remove the horn assembly. Remove the 3 prong retainer clip and the nut underneath it. Make sure the steering wheel is straight. Remove wheel with a puller. Compress lockplate with a lockplate remover & remove the circlip around the centerpost. Decompress lockplate & remove lockplate. Unscrew hazzard control. Pull turn signal assembly from the column. Unscrew white turn signal electronic assembly inside the column, gently pull aside. Remove brass connector that goes from the turn signal assembly and the ignition lock switch. Unscrew ignition lock cylinder retaining screw, pull out ignition switch, replace.
