Vapor lock is caused when the fuel inside the fuel line of a carburated engine boils. In the absence of oxygen, the fuel will boil and the pressure of the vaporized fuel will push against the rest of the fuel, back toward the gas tank.

It isn't a dangerous condition, it just keeps the engine from running. Once the fuel pump is trying to pump air, there will be no fuel pumped into the carburater.

That is the definition of true vapor lock, and if that's what you have you need to insulate the fuel line from the heat of the exhaust line.

The reality of it is, there was very little true vapor lock in any vehicle manufactured in the last half of the 1900's. usually there was a problem with the fuel pump. A pinhole in the diaphragm of the fuel pump would allow air in and the pump wouldn't be able to pull gasoline in.

There are two options:

1. Replace the fuel pump.

2. Bypass the fuel pump and install an electric fuel pump.
