The Mazda 626 is notorious for having design flaws in its transmission. The shifter cable pin or bushing can be replaced with after market piece which will hold up much better. You will not have to purchase the entire shifter link assembly from Mazda for $150.00 !

The pin itself can be accessed by removing the airbox ..the linkage will directly below.
I have just tried an alternate "fix". My cable retainer failed and the cable end just slid off the shifter shaft. So I put the cable back on the shaft and held it in place with a 5/16" "Axle Cap Nut" from Lowes Building Supplies (Hillman part number 882547, cost less than $2.00).
Installation: Using a long nosed pair of Vice Grips (r), open the jaws until they just pass over the ends of the shifter rod. Then tape the axle nut to the stationary jaw so it won't fall off when you try to install it. Open the Vice Grips (r) and place the axle nut at the end of the shifter rod. Using the Vice Grips (r), squeeze the nut into place over the end of the shifter shaft. I'll let you know how this works out.

how do you remove the shifter boot in a 2001 hyundai tiburon
Try the automotive section in your local library.
You adjust the cable on top of the shifter module ( just below brake master cylinder) If you can't recognise this get someone else to sit in driver seat (with ignition on, but not running) and shift gears . You will see the cable moving on top of module. This bolt holding the cable can be adjusted VERY carefully.
there are 2 diffrent kinds of shifter cables out there & they dont tell you !! One is for floor shifter & other is for on the tree !! both have size diffrence so make sure you tell them what you have at parts store or local auto wreckers !!
A lot of Mazda' s will do that. It has nothing to do with the brake. You need to crack the wheel. What I mean by that is to pull the stering wheel hard left, then hard right until the shifter unlocks. Some times this can takes some time but its the only way to free up the shifter. My self and my son between us have had 6 Mazda's and at any given time one of them has been stuck in neutral. The first day I picked up my new Mazda truck it did it, I called the dealer in a panic, he told me to do this (in 1989) and it has never failed. I love my Mazda.
If the problem is that the shifter will not move you need to check the shift cable. If the shifter moves, but the trans doesn't shift; you need to check the fluid level and , the system for trouble codes.
