Get a new pair
The Ferris wheel that was at the Ferris wheel was blown to pieces by a monster charge of dynamite.
well its simple. the plastic/rubber part sometimes referred to as the "stub" amplifies the sound coming through the wire. and virtually without the rubber piece the sounds would hardly come out, and sound as if the headphones were blown. so it is essential to use the "bud".
The answer is yes, I recently blew out a pair, yet the circumstances were more than most people would have to worry about. I managed this feat by while recording drum tracks for a cd, the beats were plugged into a headphone interface that boosted the volume output by a crazy amount. This allowed the headphones to get louder than any music device would allow them to get and therefore blew them out.
There should be unless the volume is turned down too low or you have blown speakers. It could also automatically pause or mute when you unplug.
your speakers may be blown , or just getting old . try changeing the earphones, and if that doesn't work you might have to get it fixed at somewhere where they can change the part that you plug your earphones into.
the speakers must be blown in one of the headphones.
with skullcandy earbuds i have found if you take the little mesh metal piece that you hear sound out of, out, they not only work again but play much louder. now this is only true with the in ear earbuds. not the over ear, or on ear.

Blown over, blown down, yes, but not blown away.
There are many reasons as to why this may occur. The cable connecting the headphones to the device may have a short in it. The drivers (the speakers) may have blown out (however, this is quite unlikely). The headphone jack may be malfunctioning. The device may not be playing anything.
