By adding more of the other ingredients - this will dilute the amount of onion in your soup. You can also try to overpower the taste with spices, but that might just make the whole thing worse.
Well I just did it today and the only answer I had was to double/triple the other ingredients thus making more servings but it worked!

You should soak the chopped onion for at least an hour in:
water + salt
or
water + vinegar
or
water + lime (I like this one)

Cooking can also reduce onion flavor.
If they are large pieces, you can strain the onion chunks out or use a spoon to scoop them out. The smaller they are, the better a fine mesh strainer will work. If this is not possible, it is also an option to make more sauce by adding some more base or water to dilute out the over-powering onions.
If it is left out for too long, it is the onion that turns soups.
add more lentils, or broth
try adding more liquid, cant say more without seeing and tasting the soup.
Adding too much salt is very hard to mask. The best way to fix the problem is to make more soup. You can add cream to thin it out without losing flavor or texture. Otherwise making more soup is the best way to help the soup.
put more water in it
Rule of thumb is don't choose anything that is too messy to eat example no spaghetti, or french onion soup, nothing that requires too much finger handling. Liqour is usually not suggested.
Don't put red onions in.
He is probably eating too many onions. Or too much onion dip.
well depends what soup your making, if its like chicken soup with corn starch and spices then maybe alot of onions would go with it but if a really watery soup, it would be horrible, unless your using onion powder
