Usually by a number or a reference notation. For example:- "The idea that it was all plain sailing in Sir Loyd's boat...(1) or it might be (See (d)).

At the bottom of the page you will see (1) or (See (d)) Along side these notations will be in much small writing the explanations that could not be contained in the main body of the write. The reference numbers or notations next to boat..will be in much smaller print.

They are further notes on who may have made the boat, who previously owned it, its cost etc. These are points of interest that will not be included in the actual book.
