How do you format a Gateway computer when the CD from the company is lost?

You might want to contact Gateway and see if you can buy a new Cd for your machine. Or go and check some used OS's from a reliable software vendor.

Install Linux. I prefer Fedora.

if your gateway is out of warranty, the only way you will get new disk from gateway is to buy one from them. make sure when you buy new one that u use it as soon as you get it my disks from gateway were missing drivers, i got messed about by gateway untill warranty was out now they will not support computer unless i buy another disk needless to say i will not purchase gateway or emachines again both same company

Use a free program such as Active@ KillDisk or NUKE. Both these programs are found for free on the web

You could also try to find someone locally that would be willing to loan you their copy of windows. Microsoft does have you register that particular version, but if you tell them your hard drive crashed they will give you the confirmation code. I've got 3 computers right now all running off of one OS with absolutely no trouble from microsoft.

If it is brand new and factory, it has a recovery partition labeled D.
