How do you format drive C so a new OS can be installed? |
[Edit] |
Personally, I'd go to www.bootdisk.com if your are going to install windows xp, here's what I'd do. from bootdisk.com, find the windows ME with ramdrive file, download it to your desktop and extract it to a floppy disk, then search google for a file called, smartdrv.exe, download that little file and copy it to your floppy drive. Now shut down and restart with the floppy in the drive, choose the option to boot into DOS with CD rom support, after a bit, you'll be at an A: (Prompt)
From here, type format c:/u (This means format c drive unconditionally) Now when it's done, name the drive if you so choose and hit enter, the drive is now ready for windows xp. Now, from the A: prompt, type smartdrv.exe now from Dos find your CD rom drive usually D or E by typing CD D:/ D:/ Now you'll be at a D Prompt if D is the actual drive letter assigned to it, if not keep searching. Once you've found the drive, type dir/w <ENTER> now type i386 once at an i386 prompt, type winnt.exe and your off to the races.... Just be sure you KNOW your CD key before you begin this process.
