Papaya or papaw is the fruit of the Carica papaya plant. It is native to the American tropics and first cultivated in Mexico. They can be grown anywhere that the soil is moist in hot weather and dry in cold, and protected from light frost. They are tropical, so a freeze will disable the plant.
