I'm wondering if you are looking for a list of the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and what they mean or if you are wanting to know how to get any codes that may be stored on board due to a fault that's occurred.
On model years 96 and later the only way to obtain the codes is by using a scanner that plugs into an outlet typically located under the dash on the drivers side near the side wall. The scanner will display any active codes. It would probably be less expensive to just take the vehicle in to a repair shop that has a scanner than to buy one.
If you want a list of all codes that can be shown you can obtain these codes and an explanation of each by purchasing one of the popular repair manuals from publishers such as Hayes or Chilton. Usually these manuals are available at your local library in their reference section and contain a wealth of other information.
Hope this helps and Good luck to you !!

To remove the Belt the power steering pump needs to be loosened. There is one 13mm pivot bolt at the top front, one 13mm nut under in the front (adjuster lock nut), two 13mm in back of the pump, and then loosen the adjuster bolt on the driverside also a 13mm. Its a little easier with the aux fan out. That will loosen the belt. Then the alt comes out from underneath with 10, 13, 14, 15mm bolts/nuts. You have to remove the stamped steel bracket in the front of the alternator to make it easier to get out.The wiring is on the back. the hot wire is 10mm and there is a small sensor of some sort on the bottom of the alternator that has two wires and two small 7mm nuts.Removing the battery before you pull the alt makes it a MUCH easier job and it should disconnected just to be safe.Wiggle the alternator out the frontside through the AC fan bladesThere is a great Video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHCyCY8_lsc--If the alternator is just too big for removal without comprompising the fan blades, try unbolting the front mount, fan shroud and the fan blade/cclutch itself.

DTC- Diagnostic Trouble Code.
Assuming the check engine light is illuminated, have the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) read. If in fact you have a bad cat, the codes will help lead you to the faulty cat. Your local auto parts store can help you with that at no cost.
If you successfully repaired all the DTC's, the ECM will turn the light off after several ignition/drive cycles and no DTC's have returned.
