When treating a sprained or strained ankle, the acronym R.I.C.E. is used as a guideline. If you are in doubt about the nature or severity of your injury always seek medical advice.

Rest - Sit down, and do not put the injured ankle under any more strain. Avoid any moderate or heavy physical activity for up to 48 hours.

Ice - Apply an ice pack or a cold compress for at least 20 minutes. The sooner this can be applied after the injury, the better. This reduces the swelling and inflammation, and will also relieve some of the pain.

Compress - Bandage the injured ankle using a roller/crepe bandage. Ensure the bandaging is tight but not constricting. This will act as a cushion and support for the injured ankle.

Elevate - Raise the limb on a chair, as high as comfortably possible. Elevation reduces the amount of blood that circulates through the leg therefore reducing the pain and swelling associated with the injury.

If you are in doubt about the severity of the condition, seek medical advice. If a fractured ankle is suspected, transport to the nearest emergency department or call for ambulance assistance.

An injured ankle can only heal with time. Rest, sleep well and avoid any physical exertion on the foot.

Use tight ankle support, simple pain killers, and if it has a lot of bruising you may need an X-ray to exclude the possibility of fracture.
