Answer
White wine usually works wonders to get red wine stains out (not sure how it will work on old red wine stains, but give it a shot.) It's wiser to get a proper carpet cleaning service in to get your rugs clean. Often, when we spot clean, we forget their is foam padding under the carpet and all one manages to do is get the surface spot out, but, eventually the spot returns because the rubber matting under the carpet has been soaked with the soil as well. Steam cleaning is about all you can do to be sure the stain is out. If the carpet is fairly new and expensive it's important to get a good carpet cleaning company up and have them do it.

You can also have your carpet professionally re-dyed to get rid of the bleached areas. Look in your local yellowpages under carpet care.
