A good filtration system is the first step. You don't have to spend a lot of money, although you can and this could include UV. But, it doesn't have to. One of the best filtration systems around is one designed by the Japanese. It uses a pump and a shallow area containing aquatic plants with a sceen and outflow back into the main part of the pond. No filters to clean, the plants look nice, provide oxygen for the water and do an amazing job of getting rid of pollution. Add a waterfall and things and forget about cleaning polyester filters, buying beads, replacing bulbs, etc. Put this on a solar panel with a magnetic pump and forget about the rower bill, too. Now, you can just enjoy your fish an the atmosphere it creates. Just make sure you have flow through the aquatic filter or mosquitos...
