the easiest and cheapest way is to use public transportation. From Gare du nord:

métro (underground) line 4 towards Orléans - step down at 'Saint-Michel'

or

RER (underground train) line B towards 'Robinson' or towards 'Saint-Rémy-les Chevreuse'or towards 'Massy-Palaiseau' - step down at 'Saint-Michel' (2nd stop)

at station St Michel:

change for RER line C towards 'Versailles-rive-gauche - Château'

Fastest route: RER B southwards, step out at Chatelet, then RER A westwards to Charles de Gaulle-étoile.

By bus: route n°30, bus stop "Lafayette-Magenta" (straight out gare du nord), until Charles de Gaulle-étoile. (25 to 35 minutes depending of traffic).

By road, Versailles (palace) is 17 km from the Place de l'Étoile where stands the Arc de Triomphe - about 20 minutes drive.

By train: there are three suburban trains stations in Versailles: Versailles-Rive-Gauche, close to the palace; Versailles-Rive-Droite; and Versailles-Chantiers. All three of these stations have both a suburban rail link or a RER C rail link to Paris. The RER trains stop at a number of spots in Paris and may be more convenient for tourism.

What Metro Stop is Chateau Versailles?

It's not on the metro. RER line C to Versailles Rive Gauche is most convenient. The station is 800 metres from the palace. There are also SNCF trains from Gare Montparnasse to Versailles Rive Gauche, and from Gare Saint-Lazare to Versailles Rive Droite. There's even a train to Versailles Chantiers, but that's even further away. The 171 bus from metro Pont de Sèvres goes to the palace itself.
