Well, first off go ahead and realize that every person on the planet carries a form of the herpes virus. Chickenpox, mono, bell's palsy, HSV-1 (cold sores), HSV-2 (genital), and many others. They all stay in your system for life when you get them, and usually stay dormant in the nervous system. If you're referring to the ones that can cause symptoms on your privates, that's HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is what commonly causes 'cold sores' but what most people don't realize it that is can easily be transferred to the genitals through oral sex. 80-90% of the population has this. HSV-2 causes genital herpes and doesn't get spread to the mouth. 25% of the population has this. Most people of both types don't realize they have it, because they are asymptomatic. It can be identified by a culture swab if symptoms are present, or some places offer blood tests to see if you have developed antibodies for either strain. Both can be transmitted without visible symptoms. So, close to 100% of anyone you could hook up with has the herp. It's just what type. Go find out. Wrap it up.

∙ 13y agoYou could have genital herpes and not show any symptoms. The best way to tell is to be tested on a regular basis. If you do have symptoms, they will appear as small red itchy patches on or around your genital region.
