How do you get lead poisoning?

Answer:
There are several ways to get lead poisoning. The metal lead is taken into the body by 2different routes. They are inhaling lead, usually in the form of lead dust, and by ingesting lead- you swallow something with lead on it- or in it. Lead has been used not only as the pure metal lead in things like fishing sinkers, plumbing solder, bullets, etc, but also as an oxide of lead in older paints, mixed in plastics, etc. When working with lead, or products that contain lead, it is important to avoid inhaling dusts or vapors from the work. A respirator that is rated to protect against dusts should be used (the 99 cent dust masks do NOT do this) clothing that is contaminated with lead dust should be washed separately from other clothing. After working with materials that contain lead, WASH exposed skin with soap and water before eating, smoking or drinking. Lead paint is especially dangerous to small children- the paint may flake and chip off- and lead causes the paint to have a sweet taste. Lead based paint should be removed or covered. Do a computer search for EPA lead paint for some good information. There are simple kits to test paint for lead available at most home improvement stores. Lead is NOT absorbed through intact skin.
