The best way to get old W-2 forms is by contacting the former employer and asking them to reissue the W-2.

If that doesn't work you can get the information that was submitted under your SSN by your employer(s) directly from the IRS. On the IRS website, www.irs.gov, you can search for Form 4506. It is a printable form with instructions. This form allows you to request either copies of your W-2's from previous years, or even whole transcripts of previously filed tax returns. A request to have this form mailed to you can also be made by calling the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-1040 (press "0" until you get to an operator for faster service). This form must be have all applicable information provided, be signed and dated, and mailed to the IRS. It can take from six to ten weeks to get the information back. It is a printout of all tax information from all sources for the year, and will include other information including any 1099's from financial institutions or student loan interest payments since that information will also affect your final tax obligation. The only drawback to this is you will get only Federal information not state. You may be able to contact your State's Department of Revenue or Taxation for the state info. Some states do not have the info available.

Please consider that W-2's are not available from the IRS for the most current filing year until usually after July, so you will be filing late. For example, if it is the year 2011 and you want to file for the 2010 tax year, your documents will not be available until after the deadline for filing. If you believe your will owe the IRS, it might be wise to also file for an extension. If you are not certain you are meeting the filing requirements in any way at all, call or visit your local IRS office and ask them. They are helpful and knowledgeable.
