For me, I go over the things that made me want to leave the person. Then spend some time being single, have fun, do the things you want to do. Dont think of relationships, focus on the things important to you in life like what you want to do with it. Find hobbies, make money, meet friends. Friends will also help. Another thing that works if all else fails is to stop contacting your ex until you have gotten over him.

But the main thing here is to spend some time to yourself and move on with your life. I'd say somewhere between a few months and a year or more. You may satisfy your own needs if you need to as well before get into something more serious.
