Bees can be a big problem in some parts of the country. Please do NOT use any type of oil because if the hummingbirds brush against it the oil will get on their feathers and can cause health issues. You must start with a feeder that is specifically designed and advertised to be bee-proof. Then take care when making nectar to not make it too sweet. For hummingbirds a 4-1 ratio is good, too sweet will attract more bees than birds. Then after hanging clean off drips or spills, I like to spray them off with water from a spray bottle. Any little drip or spill will attract some bees. That should do it, but if not, hang another feeder nearby (not too close) containing a much sweeter mixture and the bees will move to that feeder leaving yours to the birds. To get rid of the bees and wasps around your hummingbird feeder, try the following: -- Bees/wasps are attracted to yellow, while hummingbirds to red. If your feeder has yellow, try painting it red or removing. -- Bees/wasps aren't very smart. Try moving the feeder a few feet in another direction. The hummingbirds will find, but the bees and wasps won't. -- Depending on the style of your hummingbird feeder, you can buy bee guards that fit over the spouts. Hummingbird beaks can get into them, but they're to long for most insects. -- Try putting vegetable oil around the feeder tubes. It won't bother the hummingbirds, and it will keep the bees away. -- Take down your feeder for a couple of days. The bees should go else where, especially if you put up a bee trap or offer something else for the bees to feed on (rotten apple in your yard, suger water in another location, etc.) Remember that bees are attracted to yellow. I have been a long time fan of feeding hummingbirds and this trick seems to work. Understand that bees are followers. A scout locates a food source and tells the troops who also come to feed. Thusly the problem. Removing the food source for a period of time works. I have found that it takes about 1 24hr period to do the trick. It is enough to discourage the bees but the birds have a more persistant personality and will check back. I have have also heard that moving the feeder around from place to place baffles the bees but not so much the birds. Good luck. You could put up a bee trap somewhat near the feeders, they will be drawn to the smell of the pherimones and hopefully away from your feeders. Other than that, they love sugary water and it is really hard to keep them away from it.

Oh, that happened to you too? If you can't lure it out with a bright big colorful flower, leave the door open. Eventually, it will leave.

.

The following method is used successfully by experts in hummingbird removal

1 Turn on the light in the garage

2 Hold a lawn rake near the light

3 The hummingbird will land on the rake

4 Very slowly, lower the rake and walk out of the garage

You could make sure you have no flowers or bushes that might attract them. You could remove everything on your property that is brightly colored. You could get a bunch of cats. They don't like air horns, you could hit the air horn sound every 5 minutes or so.

To keep bees and ants off the feeders, I spread a thin film of vicks around the "holes" and on the plastic parts the birds do not come in contact with. The bees will inspect it , but after a few fly bys they leave. Spread it liberally on the hanger and the ants can't get to it.

Ants love the sugar in the hummingbird feeder. One of the best ways to keep ants out is to put a ring of salt or cayenne pepper long the trail they are using to climb to the feeder.

Tie a strip of Bounce dryer fabric at the top where it attaches To your pole or tree. Ants won't cross it. Shows you why this fabric is so caustic. I now use wool balls in my dryer!
