Getting Rid of Head LiceThere are many ways to get rid of head lice. Some are better than others and some should not be used at all.

The WRONG Way

Using pesticide-based treatments. (They don't work and they're dangerous to your health.)

The inexpensive way

Get a good quality lice comb.

Get some olive oil.

Drench hair with oil and leave in for about an hour.

Comb out lice.

Use your fingernails to remove stubborn nits.

Be ready to do this over and over for days or weeks because your house is probably infested and your heads will get re-infested. And spraying with poison doesn't kill them.

The BEST Way

Get an essential oil based treatment to kill the lice containing Tea Tree Oil and Neem Seed Oil at the minimum.

Get an enzyme treatment to dislodge the nits so you can comb them out easily.

Get an enzyme clothing, bedding and environment treatment to help get them all out of your house.

The Medical Way

Pyrethrin (found in R&C Shampoo + Conditioner).

Permethrin (Nix Creme Rinse or Kwellada-P Creme Rinse).

Lindane (Hexit Shampoo or PMS-Lindane Shampoo).

All available at most pharmacies.

Pyrethrin and permethrin are safe when used on humans. However, lindane can be toxic (poisonous). Products with lindane should not be used on infants or young children younger than 2 years of age. You don't need a prescription for these products. And contrary to the above, they work well.

Advise from the American and Canadian Medical Associations

Some people use home remedies such as mayonnaise, petroleum jelly, olive oil, vinegar or margarine. Although these products may make it hard for lice to breathe, they probably won't kill them. Certainly not all of them and that will start the cycle all over.

There is very little evidence that wet combing works (removing lice by combing wet hair with a fine-tooth comb called a NIT COMB)

There is no evidence that products such as tea tree oil or aromatherapy work to treat head lice.

More Helpful InformationFirst go to the drugstore and buy a lice treatment kit. Nix is a good brand and should work well. The treatment kit should include a nit comb and lice shampoo. Now place a towel around your neck and wash your hair with the special shampoo in the sink. Follow the instructions on the bottle or on the case it came in. This treatment gets the lice out of your hair. You'll need a nit comb to get the nits out. Comb slowly and carefully through damp hair. You need to comb every single strand. When you see something small and grey on your comb wipe it off with a tissue or paper towel. To get the back of you hair have a friend help. Wash all the sheets and pillowcases and clothes using the hottest setting on the dryer that's safe enough for the fabric. Vacuum the mattress and the room. Buy new brushes and combs. Hats and headbands can be left in a sealed plastic bag for 2 weeks. This would kill any lice on them. Once your all done make an appointment will your doctor for a check. If they don't see anything you're all clear. If they find a nit or a louse you'll have to repeat the process over. If you are a student and head lice is going around your school, buy some lice repellent spray. Try Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel Spray and Shield.

There are several over the counter treatments that you can use to remove headlice and their nits but they have tons of harmful chemicals that are not good for your health and your hair. Plus, they are very expensive and studies have shown that lice are becoming immune to these treatments.

I have used and continue to use Fairytales Hair Care products for lice. Their Lice-Goodbye removal kit is FANTASTIC and it has NO harmful chemicals and is NON TOXIC you can use it a bunch of times and it wont harm your hair. Plus, it smells good and it WORKS!!

Their website has more info: www.fairytaleshaircare.com

The best deal is to use the flea dip for dogs. It cost 1/3 the price, twice as strong, and you get double the amount.

What is the easiest way to get rid of lice eggs?

there many cleaning agents which you can purchase from pharmacists which is a natural and gentle head lice treatment that eliminates live lice and nits (lice eggs) in one day. It is important to use an effective nit comb to remove all dead lice, nits, and debris after a head lice treatment is used.

Foggers that kill lice?

Foggers should not be used to kill lice. Heat should be used to kill the eggs and a pyrethrin based insecticide/shampoo to kill the adults.

Does Crisco kill lice?

It worked for me about 10 years ago. I researched lice life cycle and used treatment length appropriate, including a little extra for any little critters possibly hiding. I applied the crisco on my entire head and hair. Watched a couple of TV programs and then combed crisco out of my hair removing as much as possible. Then I shampooed. Did this daily. Combing out first treatment resulted in finding 26 lice and up to that point didn't even know I had them. When I first discovered one, I began treatment immediately. BTW Used generic vegetable shortening. Hope this helps

Will sergeants skip-flea shampoo kill lice on humans?

About 2 years ago, i compared the ingredients in the sergeant's cat skip flea shampoo to the treatment i was using on my children for lice from walmart. It had the same active ingredients. I was a bit nervous using pet shampoo on humans, but the ingredients were the same. We used it, and it was a much nicer type of shampoo than the human stuff we were buying, plus there was actually enough in the bottle to do the job! I had spent a fortune at walmart. It had a wonderful coconut smell, and i am now trying to find some more. We don't have lice anymore, as this did work for us. But i sometimes feel that a preventative wash would be a good idea! Sometimes after sleepovers and such.

Can you get rid of pubic lice by shaving?

No, crabs will not go away by shaving. No it can not.crabs are like lice. when you have lice you don't just shave your because they can lay eggs on your scalp its the same thing with crabs the shampoo kills them and their eggsyes it will, so better u apply medicationcream lotion afterLice are "ectoparasites", meaning they live on your skin. They survive by biting you and drinking your blood. They will NOT enter your bloodstream. They do NOT lay eggs under your skin. Shaving is not a bad idea, but sometimes shaving is not sufficient because some of the eggs may have gotten into your bedding (wash in HOT water and use bleach), or some may be living on the hair on your thighs, around your butt, etc. You might still need to use a topical insecticide.Dr. Karl.AnswerShaving will not completely get rid of them. You may still need to see a doctor as pubic lies can penetrate your skin and start laying eggs, which might eventually end up in your blood stream.Adult pubic lice are 1.1-1.8 mm in length. Pubic lice typically are found attached to hair in the pubic area but sometimes are found on coarse hair elsewhere on the body (for example, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, mustache, chest, armpits, etc.). Pubic lice infestations (pthiriasis) are usually spread through sexual contact. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not play a role in the transmission of human lice. Both over-the-counter and prescription medications are available for treatment of pubic lice infestations. You can get rid of crabs(lice) by getting some Permethrin cream, apply the cream to the affected area & wash it off after 10 minutes. The cream is available over the counter, please do not use for treatment on your eyelashes or eyebrows. But if you only have lice(crabs) in your hair, you can use Lindane shampoo, this shampoo that is applied to the affected area & thoroughly washed off after 4 minutes. It is available only by prescription, and can't be used for treatment of eyelashes or eyebrows. For infested eyelids or eyebrows an ointment is available by prescription.See related links. No it will not; you need treatment.

Problem Does using oilganics shampoo removes greater number of lice than the other brand of anti-lice shampoo?

yes, based on experience we have here in Batangas, the head lice infested grade 4 girl used to have NITS at virtually 80% of her hair from ROOT TO TIP (no exaggeration) not to mention how much lice found in the hair (it's really freaky, i bet she would have won the MOST NUMBER of head lice if there was a contest). she used oilganics shampoo for a month and a half religiously, and after which, she was screened from head lice. she used practically all pesticide-based products like kwell and licealiz (they use permethrin and pyrethrin -- same content as those in insect killers), to no avail. oilganics really worked her. the girl is my good friend's daughter, and i witnessed how it really treated the kid.

Should you kill lice right away?

I've had lice before pretty bad. It is probably better to kill the lice right away because if not then they will keep developing and it will be harder to get rid of them. To get rid of them my mom and I used lice shampoo and then after a shower we used a comb and combed my hair and we got some bugs out that way. But yes you should try to get rid of it as soon as you find out. Hope this helped!! :)
