There are both pharmaceutical and natural treatments for herpes.

Valtrex and Acyclovir are the most common drug approaches. I personally used an all-natural treatment called Herpaflor that I got on the internet, because it works great for me and is cheaper. But, to each his own. Antiviral therapy shortens the length of an outbreak and reduces the number of outbreaks in the future.

During the first outbreak of herpes, most people should be treated with an antiviral medicine, which shortens the duration by about 2 days and shortens the healing time of lesions.

Some people use episodic treatment, taking medication during each outbreak to speed up healing. This treatment must be started at the first sign of an outbreak to have any effect. (The prodrome period causes flu like symptoms, fever, pain or burning on urination and/or swollen glands.) Doctors recommend having the Rx filled before you need it, as time matters.

Those troubled with recurrent infections can take medication daily to prevent outbreaks; called suppressive therapy - this can reduce or eliminate outbreaks for some people.

Stress is thought to play a huge role in recurrent infections, using meditation or other stress relieving exercises can greatly reduce the frequency of out breaks.

Use OTC medication; acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen, for pain and fever.

Wear loose fitting, cotton clothing.

Ice or cool packs to lesions as needed.

Frequent hand washing to prevent spread.

Sprinkle corn starch into underwear to stay dry.

Warm baths, with air drying or gentle patting dry with a towel.

Don't scratch, as this can spread the lesions & cause an infection.

To prevent the spread of the virus to an uninfected partner, avoid sexual contact from the time the herpes symptoms are first noticed, until the lesions have healed.

You can choose either prescription drugs (that you get from a doctor, like Valtrex) or natural treatments. I use something called Herpaflor that you can get on the Internet. It works better for me than Valtrex did, and is a lot cheaper. But, things work differently for different people.

• Do NOT use any antibiotics or steroids
• Remove carbohydrates, chocolate, and all sugars from your diet for the 2 weeks
• Take lysine, zinc, and a food based multivitamin during this time
• Increase your protein intake, but avoid nuts (due to arginine counteracting lysine)
• Apply a patch of 2% iodine to your skin which is about the size of a large coin, every day. Increase the amount if absorption takes **12 hours or less.

It may take more than one attempt to kill it, but it is worth the effort in the long term considering the benefits upon your health of being herpes free. To have a good chance at success, this protocol must be followed religiously. Good luck.

I have found that the herbal supplement Astragalus taken at the first sign of an outbreak of herpes 1, usually tingling or soreness on the lip, will stop the virus. Take two capsules together of the root extract, at least 400mg. It works great!
