They will always be present outdoors, but you can reduce their numbers. There is a large variety of effective products for them. Baits tend to be better than chemical solutions. They are roaches btw. I get a kick out of how your state doesn't want tourists to know.
The large outdoor roaches live of of decaying organic matter such as rotting leaves and wood (in a hollow tree), keeping such food sources at a minimum around the home can help..another common name for these are water bugs, they have a high moisture need from egg to adults stage so sometimes they can indicate a water problem around a home

i think the writer of this question meant to say, " How to get rid of palmetto bugs?"
The whole state because of the climate. They have so many roaches, they made up their own name for them-palmetto bugs.
a palmetto bug looks like a roach.
Cabbage Palmetto
Because of the climate there and the problem with palmetto bugs out of control, i would recommend it for everybody personally, but it depends on your individual tolerance.

Palmetto bugs generally live outside and eat decomposing plant matter. But when it's wet and they multiply so rapidly, some of them get inside. Unless your kids are hoarding piles of wet leaves in their rooms, it probably has nothing to do with the bugs.
The Cabbage Palmetto is Florida's state tree.
