Trying to Be Scorpion-freeThis is hard to do. Scorpions can (and will) enter through small cracks and gaps around the home. They can also enter around window and door frames. They will mostly move at night in their hunt for food.

If you hire pest control, it can take up to a year to rid a home of all of them. They can stay in the same place (such as a wall) for long periods of time. Scorpions can go without food, but not without water. If a wall is damp, a scorpion will stay in that spot for a long time, and sometimes breed.

If you close as many cracks and entry spots as you can, it will help. I like to take a black light outside at night and find them (they glow). I own a local pest control company in south Texas and they are a big problem here. I have found homes that have 20-30 a day. We tend to treat the lawn with water-activated products to provide a longer-life chemical treatment. They come from the outside into the house, so the more you can do outside to stop them, the better. Inside treatments are needed as well - but the outside is the key.

How can I protect my family?

Scorpion Safes provide your family with protection from scorpions climbing up bed and crib legs, however, there are other ways that scorpions can find their way into your bed and cribs that are preventable if you do the following precautionary measures:

  • PLACE THE SCORPION SAFE containers around the legs of the crib/bed.
  • Check the crib/bed in advance of putting your child to bed.
  • Remove the crib bedskirt or purchase one that does not touch the ground.
  • To keep scorpions from entering the bed sideways, move the crib away from the wall *and be sure that blankets and sheets do not touch the wall or the floor.
  • Shake out all clothing and shoes before putting them on the child.
  • Have the child wear shoes at all times and be especially careful around hot tubs or *pools at night.
  • Teach your children not to pick up bugs in your home.

What type of Scorpion is lethal?

The lethal species of scorpion found in the United States is the Centruriodes, of which the Bark Scorpion is a member and the most prevalent in the south and the west. The bark scorpion's length is one and one half to two inches. It is different from the 56 other species of scorpions in the United States in two ways. The first is it is the ONLY scorpion that climbs. It climbs up your furniture, up your walls, in your cabinets with ease. THE ONLY MATERIAL THE BARK SCORPION CANNOT CRAWL UP IS GLASS. The second characteristic that makes it different is it's ability to curl up its tail and lay its body completely flat. This is how it finds its way into your home.
One of the problems associated with a scorpion sting is identifying it. There will not be a mark associated with the sting and usually no swelling. The signs and symptoms to look out for after a scorpion sting are eyes moving in an uncoordinated, roving manner, restlessness, chaotic thrashing and hypersalivation.. They may have drooling and facial twitching and of course will be crying and visibly upset.

Food and shelter are what cause scorpions to enter houses.

Specifically, scorpions include among their prey insects, lizards, mice and Spiders. They also may cannibalize their own kind. They will find such food sources indoors. They will find undisturbed, moist, cool corners and locations in attics, basements, bathrooms, garages, kitchens, laundry/mud/utility rooms, and sheds. The above-mentioned shelters serve the dual purpose of protection when dying or injured and when fleeing environmental stress or predators.
