Mold has a musty, earthy smell. In some extreme cases, it can be so over powering that it makes your eyes water and your nose hairs burn.

Cheap and easy...Baking soda. Put a couple of open boxes around the area and leave them there.

Boil some maple syrup on the stove, try to avoid making it boil but if it does it's alright. That should get rid of the smell.
