How do you get rid of the pre-installed ad-ware and useless applications upon arrival of a new computer?

Shovelware

You mean you don't like all the shovelware on your 'puter? I used to uninstall all that crap, but now I just keep it. Many of the programs come with their own uninstall utilities. If they don't, use add/remove. Go to the start menu, then control panel, then add/remove programs. Select the programs you want to remove, and click remove.
