You can get rid of mites on snakes by completing an intence cleaning on your cage every 4 days for 12-16 days or until needed. First buy Povidone-Iodine and a mite killer. I have heard that "mite off" works well and I have had great results with Natural Chemistry Reptile spray. On day 1 prepare a mixture of 80 degree F. water with the Povidone-Iodine until it looks like medium tea. Before you put your snake in it hold him in some plain 80 degree F. water so that he can drink or deficate. You might, pardon the pun, have to hold your snake in the concoction in order to keep him calm and in it. If he deficates (poops) then change the mixture and put him back in. Keep your snake in there for atleast 10 minutes. The Povidone-Iodine will help to heal any bites and drown any mites. Make sure that even the head gets covered in the mixture, use a que-tip soaked in it to do that. Once your snake has been soaked, put him in a temperary cage filled with paper towels to dry off. While your snake is in a temporary cage, take out all of the items in his cage(logs, stones, sticks, plastic plants etc...). Logs can be baked in the oven at 200 degrees F. for 2 hours, just keep an eye on them. If they are to big to go in the oven then soak them along with the other cage items in hot water, completely submerged, for a day. Take out the substrate and throw it in a trash bag, GET IT OUT OF THE HOUSE ASAP!!! If you have carpet throw it away, you can buy a new one at the end of the process. Once the cage is empty, vacume it making sure to get in all of the corners. Then spray down your cage with the cleaner you bought and let in sit for 5-10 minutes. After sitting, wipe it down with a wet cloth and dry it. Then vacume again. I recommend using news papers as a substrate and using boxes as hide outs, until it's over. Your snake won't be as happy with these things but you don't want to waste money on substrate or have to clean the cage items every 4 days. After airing out the cage for an hour, you can add the news paper and boxes(cut an opening in the side with the boxes bottum up). Now you can put your snake back in! Do this every 4 days until the mites are gone, it shouldn't take more than 16 days. On the last day you can redecorate your cage to it's former glory knowing that your snake can live mite free! I hope this system works just as well for you as it did for me. I used it on my 4 month old corn snake who was sold to me with mites. It worked!

Yes sadly any mite on any animal can be harmful to humans, even on our lovable pets.

Unlikely. Unless its a parasite that can attach itself to the snakes body like mites or ticks (which they do tend to have) it will just get wiped off.

Not likely, snakes are mostly wild, and do not bother you.

Not fleas - but they can certainly get mites.

Can you use sevendust to kill mites off of snakes?

Yes, Sevin is relatively safe to use on snakes. However, I have found the best way to get rid of mites is to place the infected snake in a covered bucket of water for a couple hours while you thoroughly clean out the cage, wash it and replace the bedding. The mites usually drown. May have to be repeated again after a few weeks if the mites return.

What types of snakes don't get IBD?

IBD has only been found in Boas and in rare cases Burmese Pythons. Snakes outside of those families have not been found so far to have IBD. Mites have been known to transfer it between host but snakes such as King snakes and Corn snakes have not been found to contract it. If you are considering a species for a pet that is not susceptible to IBD I recommend Corn Snakes. If you would still be interested in Pythons then Ball Pythons and Kenyan Sand Boas are good starts. Both are hardy and neither have had any known occurrence of IBD
