How do you get the best motorcycle insurance rate if you do not have a good driving record?

[Edit]

Answer

To get the best insurance rate, drive a bike that is under 1000cc. Once you hit the 1000cc mark, the insurance costs increase. Also get a bike you can afford without too much financing. You can get a lot of bike for $6,000. Also cruiser style bikes are less expensive to insure than the high performance sport bikes. This may be because the sport bikes are largely owned by the types that are most likely to get in an accident. That and the fact that they are expensive to repair once they have been in an accident.

Answer

OK, I just wanted to respond to the guy that obviously knows nothing about sport bikes. Stereotyping aside, our bikes are no more or less expensive to fix than any other bike on the road with a comparable price. Harley's and customs are going to cost tons more to fix.

Answer

First off, shop around. Call various companies and get some rates. One insurance company may be more painful in the pocketbook than another that is more forgiving. Don't be afraid to try and 'haggle.' It works, still. The first answer was correct about insurance prices. As the size of your engine goes up, your insurance prices climb. All in all, however, sport bikes are more expensive to insure, it's just a fact of life. In car terms, insurance on a Ford Taurus costs less than insurance on a Mitsubishi Spyder, or a Mustang, for that matter.

Answer

"Haggling" with insurance companies- that's a good one!!

There is no negotiation for rates, you can choose different levels of coverage or deductibles for lower or higher premiums.

Shop around. Be aware that the highest risk drivers (youthfuls on sport bikes) are among the highest premiums. For someone under 21 on a high performance bike with collision and comprehensive you can count on paying more than the cost of the bike in 2 years.

Answer

Another way to get lower rates is to take Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) courses. Most insurance companies offer discounts for completion of these courses, not to mention that they are just a good idea to take.
