Vicodin is a controlled substance that works by blocking pain receptors in your brain. It is probably the most commonly prescribed prescription pain medication in the United States. Vicodin is an Opiate and effectively blocks pain from getting to the pain receptors. The most common side effects are dry mouth, nausea, drowsiness, and the feeling of disconnectivity.
Vicodin is a narcotic and will get you "high" depending on what your definition of High is.
Vicodin is a combination of acetiminephen and the opiate. The normal prescribed dosage is 500 milligram tablet which contains 495 miligrams of acetiminiphen (Tylenol) and 5 mgs of the opiate. Normal dosage is 1-2 tablets for adults. Some people with a resistance to vicodin may need to take 3 tablets to get the same effect. Taking four tablets will cause you to throw up violently and taking many more than that could be fatal (means you could die).
The most common way people get vicodin is with a prescription from thier doctor. If you have a regular doctor and have intense pain, your doctor will likely prescribe it for you.
An illicit way that "drug seekers" get this narcotic is by going to the emergency room and complaining of pain. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. If the doctor that sees you suspects you of drug seeking he or she may refuse to prescribe it.
Another illicit way I have heard about, but not verified, is that you can get vicodin online. As I said, I cannot verify this.
Dentists prescribe vicodin quite often for dental pain.
