The best and safest way to learn to give a good back massage is to take a couple's massage class intended for laypeople to learn to give non-professional massage to each other.

Look in your phone book for a massage school near you. There are so many that most larger cities have at least one, and usually more. Ask them about a couples massage class, or ask if you can come in and visit a class when they are learning how to massage the back. Most schools welcome visitors as a part of their general good will philosophy and also in hopes that you may enroll.
