The term implies being in a situation that is more formal and structured than just walking up to someone, saying "Hello, my name is Joe Blow," and shaking hands. It suggests that you might be making a speech, giving a presentation, etc. A self-introduction should be short and to the point. Quickly say who you are, what you are, and why you're here. Example: "Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. My name is Joe Blow, I am the president of Joe Blow International Enterprises Incorporated, and I am pleased to be here today to unveil the brand new Joe Blow Magnificent Universal Widget." Example: "Mayor Jones, my name is Joe Blow, I am the president of the Nimby Ratepayers Association, and I am here to express our organization's outrage that property taxes will not be increased this year." Introduce yourself boom-boom-boom, then get on with what you have to say.
