Plant cherries in a sunny area protected from winds. The soil must be very well drained and an addition of compost helps, even though cherries do not need particularly rich soil. Prepare a hole twice as deep as the tree to be planted needs at this stage, and back-fill with a mix of soil and compost. If you soil drains poorly, plant the tree in a shallower hole so you can create a mound on top to ensure better drainage. Water in well, even if rain is forecast, as this gets rid of air pockets in the soil. Always make sure your cherry has a pollinator, unless it is self-fertile. See the Related Question on the left under the blue pod for more on pollination.

Put a cherry pit in the ground and water it regularly. Some kind of organic fertilizer might be helpful as well.
