Paper University e-Newsletter: September/October 2001 FEATURE STORY Celebrate Johnny Appleseed's Birthday on September 26th! September 26th marks the birthday of American folk hero Johnny Appleseed, one of the most altruistic men America has ever seen. Born on Sept. 26, 1774 in Leominster, Massachusetts, Johnny Appleseed's real name was John Chapman. In the late 1780's, he set out alone in a canoe to plant orchards of apple trees along the frontier. Everywhere he went, he gave settlers and pioneers apple seeds and saplings to take home to plant in their own orchards. He traveled all over Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, refusing to sleep indoors, planting thousands of apple trees throughout the Midwest. Johnny Appleseed is described as scrupulously honest, deeply religious, and with a sense of humor. He quickly became a popular folk hero in the region, and is said to have worn a tin pot as a hat, a coffee sack as a shirt, and no shoes. He died March 18, 1845 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and is buried there at Archer Cemetery. ACTIVITIES Planting Apple Seeds Your class can follow the tradition of Johnny Appleseed by growing an apple tree of its own. Plant your tree on Earth Day next April! Here's how: Remove the seeds from your favorite variety of apple. You may try two to three different varieties of apples to see which grows best. Chill the seeds in the refrigerator in an airtight container for about six weeks. After chill period, take a small container, make a drainage hole in bottom and fill with potting soil. Place 2 to 3 apple seeds on top of the soil and cover with another 1/8" of soil. Water lightly but do not over-saturate. Place container in a shallow dish and place in a sunny spot. Cover container with a clear jar or glass or a clear sandwich bag to create a moist environment. Keep the seeds moist by watering from the bottom until the seeds germinate. Seeds will germinate in 2-3 weeks in the summertime, or up to 8 weeks in the wintertime. Once the seedling sprouts, remove the jar but do not let the plant dry out. Continue to nurture your sprouts indoors until they are large enough to survive outdoors. When your tree is 8"-10" tall, you may plant it outside in a sunny spot with plenty of room to grow. Late spring is the best time. Keep plenty of mulch around the base, and water the tree regularly. Protect it during the winter with a light covering. ...more

bear in mind "jonny" grew apples for cider, if you wand a good eating apple its best to buy one or graft it. a tree grown from seed may not be very good, it may even be horrible (or you could get lucky) nor will it bear fruit for at least 5 years and will only bear fruit on the parts of the tree that grew after 5 years

The following are the things you'll need when planning to plant an apple seed.

Planting Container

Potting Soil

Plastic Bag

Paper towels

Apple seeds

Now the planting instructions :

There are different kinds of apples. so it is important to consider which varety you would like to plant. So based on it, after you have the pple, save the seeds and cover them in a towel. Place the towel inside of a nice plastic bag. Store the plastic bag inside the refrigerator for a period of 6 weeks. Once it gets sprout, you can expect to plant. Procure some small containers and fill them with soil. Plant the sprouts inside the container. It is important to maintain sufficient moisture inside the container and also place in a place where there is enough sunlight. When they get a good size, then it is time to bring them outdoors so that they receive enough sunlight.

If you find cold weather, there is nothing panic about since cold weather is one of the favourable wether for producing good quality fruits. When the tree is in the early stages, take good care by fertilizing around them. If you have a local garden center nearby, it is great idea to consult them in the aaffair. They will get you better instructions on taking care of them.

Hope this helps.

It is really simple. First you put a couple of apple seeds in a glass of water. once you see some long roots appear you can take them out and put them in a flower pot to grow. (make sure the roots are a few inches long before you transfer them into the pot.) After they grow about two feet tall transfer them into the ground. And the best time to take them outside is late spring, or early summer.

1. Take your seeds and let them dry out in a cool place until the outsides are completely dry

2. Do down to Walmart and get yourself a peat moss sprouting box thing (it's pellets of peat moss and it comes with a little box)

3. sow your seeds

4. Wait for your seedlings to sprout a couple leaves, then transfer them to a larger pot

5. Diligently care for your new plant!

P.S. Apple trees grown this way take about 3 years to produce any fruit, you two are gonna be best friends!

Firstly, you dry out the seed. You can do this by putting it on a window sill for a couple of days Then find a spot in the garden that is not full sun, but with a balance of sun and shade. Water your plant a lot Good luck with your tree ;-)

You plant an apple seed. The seed should germinate and grow. You then have an apple seedling. This will eventually after a number of years grow into an apple tree which may or may not bear fruit. If it bears fruit the apples may or may not be worth while. So you see the whole process is interesting but not guaranteed to produce worthwhile fruit.

well its very basic but time consuming

without really going into any detail you first but the seed in fertile soil,

next cover it with dirt and water about 2 times a day,(make sure it gets plenty of sunlight, finally just repeat and within a few months you will have an apple tree. (make sure you do this within spring-summer)
