Having an out-of-body experience (OBE) can be very easy or nearly impossible depending on the natural talent of the practitioner. Some people have them regularly by accident when they go to sleep. If you are like most people though, having an OBE will require work and persistence. Basically it comes down to, staying conscious in a trance state /mind-awake, body-asleep / half asleep state, and then once in that state, being able to get out of your body. Here are some tips, mix and match as your lifestyle and preferences permit:
- When going to sleep, remember your intention to have an OBE. Get excited about it, imagine what it will be like. Imagine lifting out of your relaxed body.
- Meditate daily, for at least half an hour. This will teach you how to focus your mind, and allow you stay conscious while your body falls asleep. If you do happen to start having OBEs, it will also help stay cool in the unfamiliar situation. Some people believe that everyone has OBEs every night, the thing is we don't remember them. Meditating will help us remember our dreams and other nighttime activities, like OBEs.
- Learn how to relax your body, that will make getting into a trance state easier. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position and go over your entire body, part-by-part, trying to relax them. Exercising all of your body beforehand helps.
- Practice "energy work". Energy work is basically visualization exercises. Read books about energy work to get more details. This will help you have more powerful experiences. Ones first remembered OBEs are often extremely short, only seconds long.
- If you find yourself in a lucid dream, try to remember your intention to have an OBE. If you find yourself waking up from the dream (often there is the sensation of falling), lie perfectly still and try to will yourself into having an OBE.
- Try to wake up in early mornining, 3am-6am, and engage in some activity for half an hour or an hour, then go back to bed intending to have an OBE. Doing so helps a persons brain chemistry be optimized for having an OBE.
- Read books about OBE. You can learn some helpful tips, and it helps keep the intention of OBEing in your mind. However, don't go overboard with the reading. Sometimes reading about OBEs can trigger one, but for many people it is a distraction from going out and actually taking the time to try for themselves.
- Once you are able to get into a trance state, try to get out of your body with visualizations. Be creative! Imagine pulling yourself up using a rope, imagine moving in an elevator, imagine angels or ghosts helping you get out, imagine being in a car that is accelerating. Try visualizing thing that are very concrete and specific that involve moving. Practice these visualizations while in normal waking consciousness
- Take care of your health. Eat right, exercise, take dietary supplements, drink plenty of water (at least 1/2 gallon or 2 liters) every day. Avoid eating heavy meals later in the day, try to have a light dinner with little or no protein or fat. Especially take care of your immune system, as it is closely tied to your subconscious and your spirit. Good supplements to help OBE: zinc, magnesium, B-vitamins, MSM, Vitamin C, probiotics like yogurt or miso, foods rich in antioxidants such as greens, lycopene in tomatoes, berries. Avoid junk food, processed foods, and chemicals like MSG. Become a vegetarian or vegan, or at least cut down on animal-protein intake especially at night. Try going on a fast or juice diet 3 days a month. Eat plenty of easy to digest foods like vegetable juice or green smoothies, eat plenty of "superfoods".
- Be persistent! Try not miss a single day of practice.
- Don't be afraid! Fear can ruin your chances of having an OBE. Try to foster a fearless, cool mindset.
