How do you help a hiccupping baby? In: Child Health |
[Edit] |
Answer
You try to burp the baby. Either put the baby directly under your shoulder with their head on the top of your shoulder, and gently pat their back. You can also sit down and lay your child, stomach side down, on your thighs. Make sure their head is supported but their legs can hang down. When patting their back, start from the bottom and work your way up to between their shoulder blades. Tap about 5 times at time as you're working your way up. Expect your child to spit up sometimes, as this is normal.
Answer
A little drop of gripe water also works very well for hiccups that are not stopping.
Answer
IF YOUR NEWBORN is a voracious eater (drinker) whether breastfeeding or bottle feeding, try to slow them down with short breaks priodically. Sometime, drinking quickly and/or getting to much air may cause hiccuping. Also take short breaks and "burp" them frequently. See if this helps! Good Luck!!
Answer
Although many people probably won't like this idea if your give the baby a little bit of sugar it'll knock the hiccups right out just a thought ...
ANOTHER THOUGHT Hiccups are caused by spasms of the inspiratory muscles under your diaphragm. What helps stop the spasms is carbon dioxide (what we exhale). That's why alot of people get relief by holding their breath. Same goes for people who drink a large glass of water very slowly; in essence, holding their breath. The medication prescribed for persistent hiccups (chlorpromazine hydrochloride) is NOT reccomended for INFANTS and CHILDREN under the age of two. My suggestions would be, first try the sugar thing; (it won't harm him) second, I'd try to get the baby to drink his favorite fluid (juice? milk? water?) as much as he can, very slowly. Thereafter, I'd follow one of the answers from above- slow down your babies' eating and drinking habit if he's a big eater or drinker.
