there are 3 basic types of soil:

clay, silt and sand

these are then broken down further into:

loam

sandy clay< /> sandy clay loam

sandy loam

loamy sand

clay loam

silty clay

silty clay loam

silt loam

clay is the finest grain and therefor has the slowest drainage rate,

sand has the largest grain size and thus the fastest rate of infiltration and silt has a grain size and drainage rate between those of clay and sand.
