The shift knob on the '00 and '01 Jettas cannot be removed or replaced. *** This is incorrect. You do have to replace both the shift knob and boot with a vw specific shiftknob and boot. You have bend a clip to "unlock" the old shift knob. My replacement shift knob came with a new clip so I ended up breaking the original instead of trying to keep it intact.
Very simple. There is a clip in the shifter knob that looks a lot like a big wiring staple. You can grip it with pliers and pull it straight out. The knob will then lift straight up and off. The clip is near the bottom of the shift knob and sticks in front to back, or back to front, don't remember but its an easy removal.
If its an auto shifter:
1. Put the car in lowest gear
2. Push the crome cover located on the lower half of the knob down ( if your hands are sweety or oily you will need somthing to help you push this piece down )
3. The thumb button you will want to pull this out of the side of the shifter if the crome piece slides off then continue to pull the black piece out also ( when i did this seems like i broke something but everything looked good ) .
4. After you do 1-3 the shift knob should pull off the top with no problems at all.
Put the new shift knob over the shifting rod. You will hear the retaining clips click into place securing the shifting knob.
unscrew the knob

Removing the shift knob is actually very simple if you have the Volvo "Spaceball" setup: Just push down on the knob and rotate it counter clockwise about 90degrees then pull up to remove the knob from the shaft. Depending on what type of shift knob you are replacing it with, installation of the new one may differ. See: http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?136135
twist it HARD
Grab the Pastic ring at the bottom of the shift knob. Push down to release the boot. the turn knob counter-clockwise until off.
The shift knob should be held on by set screws if its a manual or threaded on if its an auto, in the case of an auto you would have to disconnect the shift button to change the handle. You should be able to unscrew the shift knob itself. Just turn it counter-clockwise until it gets lose; finally, remove it. You should remove the plastic shift knob plate after unscrewing the knob. What you remove should resemble the shift knob u are using to replace it with. If not, then I'm sorry, I don't have the answer you need. If so, just screw on the new shift knob until it is tight and in the correct direction. Snap the new shift knob plate in to place.. go test it peace Ummm do you even own a VW????? I didn't think so. The shifter knobs in volkswagens DON"T unscrew, they have a clip you have to remove, then you can just lift it off. Where did you even get your info from????? i would really like to know. thanks.
Hey, i have a 2002 s-10, and it really doesn't come off, not by it self anyways. instead you need to push down the boot and the bottom of the shifter. you will see where you can disconnect the shaft and knob together from there.
The knob itself should turn counter clock wise and unscrew from the gear shifter. On some cars there may be a small screw you'll need to loosen which helps hold the knob in place.
