How do you install active pickups into a passive guitar?

Answer:

Take the old potentiometers (pots, or those control knobs) out, take the input jack and all the wires out.

Afterwards you need a new input jack, pots and circuit board for active pickups, than just wire it up. Active pickups are worth it because once they are in you can swap out active pickups at will to different kinds with no soldering or re-wiring at all.
