1) Prepare the surface. The walls must be drywall or 1/2" cement board (for wet areas,) floors must be plywood (not chip-board or particle board) or cement board (such as 1/4" HardiBacker.) Surface should be clean and free or debris (i.e. cleaned with a vaccuum.) Surface must also be flush-make sure all screws and nails are countersunk or at least flush with the surface of the substrate.

2) Mortar (for floors) or mastic (for walls) must be mixed to the manufacturer's specifications.

3) Mortar or mastic is then spread on the substrate using a square-notched trowel (1/4" notches for 12"x12" tile) and then tile laid over in the correct orientation. The tile should then be slightly pressed into the mortar/mastic and the edges flushed with edges of adjacent tiles. Be careful not to press the tile too hard to squeeze too much mortar/mastic out from underneath.

4) Once the mortar or mastic has cured, then gaps between the tiles are grouted using a grout float, taking care to squeeze the grout firmly between each tile. The excess grout is then removed and let to cure. The tile surface should then be polished with cheesecloth (to remove residual grout haze) and then the grout sealed with a quality sealer.

Get a trowel, putty (I can't remember exactly what it's called), and a putty knive. Spread the putty on the untiled surface with the putty knife (in small portions) and use the trowel to smooth it. Then lay the tiling on the putty and hold it in place for about 30-60 seconds, and move on, repeating said process. If you need additional assistance, pick up a how-to book on tiling or ask a customer associate when purchasing your materials. The putty referred to is a quick set cement or mortar. Some recommend an adhesive that has a bit of fexibility in it. Once the tiles are set and dried, you then work grout in between the tiles, smooth everything off and clean up.

Install ceramic tile?

The key to how to lay ceramic tile is preparation and having the right tools. 1. Measure opposite sides of the room and mark the centerof each side. Snap a chalk line between the marks. Measure and mark the center of the chalk line. From this point, use a framing square to establish a second line perpendicular to the first. Snap a second layout line across the room. 2. Check for square with a 3-4-5 triangle. Measure and mark one layout line 3 feet from the center point. Measure and mark the perpendicular layout line 4 feet from the center point. Measure the distance between the marks. If the layoutt lines are perpendicular the distance will be exactly 5 feet. 3- Lay tiles and spacer along one line from the center to the wall. 4- Divide the floor into manageable boxes, roughly 2-feet-by-3-feet for setting the tiles. Begin by laying out an L shape in the center of the room. Use the chalk lines as a guide, and separate the tiles with spacers. 5- Measure both branches of the L from the center to determine the size of the boxes you will lay out on the floor. Add the widthe of one spacer to each measurement. 6- Remove the tiles. Lay out a chalk-line grid, with each box the size of the sample you measured in Step 5. 7- Do a dry run to determine the placement and cuts. Place a row of tiles along each line using spacer. 8. To set tiles after proper preparation of the surface, begin at the center of the room and work out. Follow working lines and keep tiles aligned with plastic spacers.

Why are expansion joints required in brick walls?

Even a well constructed slab will move. Without an expansion joint you will see cracks in the brick develop over time. A proper expansion joint is one where one side does not touch the other... not even mortar, then filled with silicone.
