You can't, because when they grow up to be adult raccoons, they are aggressive and vicious and it can give you diseases.

They are wrong OK. You can the raccoon is just like a baby kitten or dog.

It all depends on how YOU raise it. Yes they will grow up, but if you have raised them right and they are well handled, they wont do that. Trust me, I've had two since they were babies. Now getting one that's a whole different story, mine were wild but not any more. I found them in my attic, the mother had died getting stuck. You may need a permit or so, but I think you can do it. Remember please that it depends on how you treat and raise the raccoon.

Why on earth would you try to keep a raccoon as a pet?

I don't think you have to take care of one that age. They should all ready be hunting. Watch the area where they are located. Raccoons carry a parasite that is in their urine. People can catch it and it is VERY hard to clean off of surfaces. I just learned about this myself from a vet. If you have raccoons on your patio or deck call a local vet to find out what you can use to clean the surface.

In most states it is illegal to keep a raccoon or any wild animal as a pet. Baby raccoons can be sweet and cuddly when quite young but once they are adolescents or adults they can be a handful and are unpredictable. They can also transmit some really nasty and usually fatal diseases to humans. Best stick with a domestic dog or cat.

In many areas it is illegal to hold any wildlife in captivity. Raising baby raccoons is best left to professional wildlife rehabilitators. However, for a comprehensive website on the care of baby raccoons click on this link.

In most locals it is illegal to hold wildlife without a permit. I have raised many, many orphaned raccoons and they can be a handful even if you know what you are doing. They require special care and diet and will perish quickly without these. You would do the animal a great favor if you place the animal with trained wildlife rehabilitator. If that is impossible, click on this link for information.

Mother raccoons try to locate their dens where their kits will be safe from predators and where they can be kept warm and nurse. The mother may leave the young for short periods so she can forage for food so that she will continue to produce milk. Once the babies are old enough to follow the mother she will begin to teach the kits how to forage for food.

Baby raccoons feed exclusively on their mother's milk until they are 6-8 weeks of age. The should never be fed cow's milk as they can not digest it and will probably die. They should be given KMR, Kitten Milk Replacer, in a small nursing bottle with a nipple. It is available in better pet shops and some veterinary clinics. Raccoons really should not be taken care of by humans, noting that they are wild animals. If anything, just leave some food outside of your house for them to eat.

Raccoons need no care if left to their own devices in the wild. They should not be kept as pets and wild raccoons will bring nothing but headaches if you leave food for them.

Will mama raccoon abandon baby if humans touch baby?

Yes because the scent is unfamiliar to them, so they won't care for it anymore. But don't worry! I accidentally picked up a newborn mouse in my garage the other day (I named him Algernon) and since his mother won't care for him anymore, we took him to the vet. He is alive and thriving just as well. Just take the baby raccoon to the vet. It'll be okay! :)
