Give it a nice fluffy special bed on the floor that is just its own (and cannot be bothered with by anyone else). If it feels secure enough, it will not seek to gain height (and more security) by climbing the furniture. Also, bitter apple spray can discourage some dogs from going onto things that have been sprayed with it.
