With a 12 gauge shotgun!!!!!

No, that is cruel.

Just put moth balls in knee high stockings and tie to various places around the tree, and also put a few at the base of the tree. They hate the smell and will not go near the tree. Also, bugs hate the smell too, so it is great for fruit trees as well.

Mothballs are not safe to handle. You don't see them anymore because they have been found to cause cancer. Avoid the darn things.

Surround the trunk with a band of sheet metal that that the squirrel cannot climb past. If there are other trees or structures close enough to the Elm, the squirrel will jump on to the tree from these.

Remove all walnut trees.

No really, try this. Every day at 8 in the morning, give him an apple and a cookie. Do this for 2 weeks, but on Day 15 just give him an apple. When he pops up asking for his cookie, clobber him with a blunt instrument.

Set a plate of pecans under the tree that are soaked in rodent poison. Then the squirrels will realize pecans mean death and will stay away or just die out from eating the poisonous ones
