Weevils along with a couple of other species of beetle lay their eggs in all of the grains we eat prior to harvest. They then hatch after the products have been on our shelves in our pantries for a while.

Sealing and freezing prevents the eggs from hatching thus is about the only solution. If they have hatched they can gnaw their way through most packaging material and can infest other products. After disposal of infested foodstuffs check the rest of your stores for small pinprick holes in the packaging. They will be perfectly smooth and almost perfectly round.

After disposing all infested foodstuffs seal all remaining stores in plastic containers and keep them in freezer. Wash all cabinets with bleach water. 1CP per 1GL

There is no way to keep them out since their eggs are already there when you purchased the product

You can remove anything that appears to be infested and freeze it. When I store rice, beans and flour I deep freeze everything for a few days. This should kill the larvae, eggs and adults. There are several good sources for preventing insect infestation in dried foods. You may have a look at sites that offer information for long term dry food storage such as survivalists websites. Once you have eliminated the insects from the food you can now work on removing them from the actual cabinets. Clean the cabinets with warm soap and water and dry them if you are able. Putting ceder wood in the cabinets will many times cause pests to simply move out. Ceder wood is unappealing to most pests. Keep food sources out of the cabinets for a few days to give the weevils time to move out. DO NOT use common pesticides in your food storage cabinets. Also, caulk any cracks in your cabinets to prevent insects from coming in through any crevices that may lead to dark and scary places.

Throw the container with the animals away - and keep the next batch in a:

Closed container with a Tight Fitting LidPut your flour and cereal in a container with a tight fitting lid, something like tupperware. That way they can't get in. In dog and cat food, freeze the food over night. same with Indian meal moths, they are about an 1/8 inch wide, 1/2 inch long.

After conducting extensive research on eliminating the EVIL WEEVIL, the following natural method can employed with the aid of common home ingredients. In my own experience and implementation, these steps proved to be the most effective in getting rid of the nasty critters. METHOD: 1. Unpack ALL grocery items in your pantry/cupboard. 2. Do a thorough inspection of each of your products or items. Throw away ALL infected items. Store weevil-attracting items in airtight storage containers such glass with sealable lids or hard plastic containers with tight covers. Weevils eat through paper and soft plastic. Another frequently mentioned but useful tip is to freeze items such as flour or rice after purchasing from the store for 72 hours or more safely 4 days. This freezing process will kill any eggs/larva that may been laid in store-bought items. 3. Remove cupboard lining. Better to be safe than sorry. It costs less to throw away the paper lining and any infested items than to constantly have to wipe down areas and re-purchase new groceries. 4. Wash pantry/cupboard with a bleach and hot water solution. Be sure to scrub all nooks/corners/crevices. Let dry. 5. Just to be safe, wipe infected area with white vinegar. 6. Once area is completely dry replace with new paper lining and sprinkle pantry/cupboard corners with crushed bay leaves or peppercorns. Both substances act as natural weevil repellents. 7. Repack pantry/cupboard with repacked/re-sealed groceries. 8. It's advisable to throw a few whole bay leaves or whole paper corns in sealed rice or flour containers. A useful and frequently mentioned tip to check whether all the nasties have been eliminated is to place a moist cloth in the infected area. Weevils enjoy dark and moist places and will most likely find its way to the cloth. Leave cloth overnight. If nothing is found on the cloth, you most likely are rid of your pests. Monitor your cupboard regularly. Unfortunately one missed weevil may create thousands more. Use preventative measures to ensure that the EVIL WEEVIL does not return! Happy De-Weeviling!

They get into the flour because that is what they eat. If you cook the flour in an oven the heat will probably kill the weevils but they will have already had eggs. If they are dead it is safe to eat them because they have not been known to cause human deaths or diseases. Hope I answered your question. Chao!
