There are many cleaning agents on grocery store shelves that take care of this problem. One home remedy is to use a mild bleach solution by mixing a small amount of common household bleach in a gallon of water. (The proportion of bleach to water is on the label.) Another is to use a rather strong mix of white vinegar and water. Apply to affected areas, scrub, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Repeat if necessary.

Note: Some molds can be extremely harmful to breathe. When cleaning mold or using cleaning solutions it is best to wear protective gloves and/or a respirator mask, and ventilate the area for your safety.

Mold removal processes can help you a lot to control the invasion of these molds. You can always try for DIY. But, professionals do these things much better than you can do at home.

The general answer is this. Mold is a living organism, and the options are the same as for other life. You can :

  • Starve it to death. Deny it whatever it eats.
  • Let it have nothing to drink. Complete absence of water will kill anything eventually.
  • Take away its home. Some molds live only in a special environment.
  • Poison it. Bleach is the most used substance, but not the only one.
  • Destroy it mechanically; anything from an SOS pad to a blowtorch. Careful !

Which way to go will depend on which mold you have and why. Probably the commonest of molds lives on damp sheetrock (US) aka plasterboard (UK). If you remove the damp plasterboard, find out what was making it wet ,and fix that problem then you are almost all the way to losing the mold problem. The mold actually eats sheetrock, but only if it's wet. Make sure that everything is bone-dry before you fit new sheetrock. When removing mold scrub it off with bleach, rather than just soapy water.

If you have a less common mold you may need to begin by identifying it. Your local library will probably have a good book, with characteristics of different molds and their treatment. In general you can probably deal with this yourself, but be cautious of black mold. Consider calling in a professional for this one.

After you have addressed any water and humidity problems with your home, you then can work on removing mold. If you need to clean a large area of mold in your home, keep the following precautions in mind:

  • When handling or cleaning moldy materials and cleaning solutions, wear protective gloves and eye goggles and dress in long sleeves and pants that can be easily removed in the work area and laundered.
  • Minimize exposure to mold spores by using a respirator designed for particle removal for protection against inhaling mold spores. Respirators can be purchased from hardware stores. Be advised that such respirators will not protect you from fumes.
  • Make sure the room is properly ventilated while you are cleaning; bleach solutions are irritating to the eyes, nose and throat.
  • Start by trying to remove a small amount of mold to determine if you will have a health reaction to either the mold or the cleaning products. If you have a reaction, or if your home has so much mold that you cannot manage the cleanup on your own, contact a professional experienced in cleaning mold in homes. You also may need to hire a professional if mold is growing in an area of your home that is difficult to access, such as in ductwork.
  • Make sure you prevent the spores and mold-contaminated dust from going into other parts of your home by hanging plastic sheeting to separate the area.
  • Place the moldy items, cleaning rags and anything else that comes in contact with the mold in airtight plastic trash bags. Seal the bags before disposing of them. When you finish cleaning, immediately wash the clothing you were wearing.
