How do you kill wisteria?

I have been attacking the wisteria that took over my family estate with a tiller and pickaxe. Its a slow process and very hard work. I till the affected area till I've pulled all of it loose that the tiller will pull then I gather the roots to burn the ones that are still in the ground at the time I pull up and if I can't I dig down further with the pickaxe and try again, if I still can't pull it up I cut it off as deep as I can stand. Its a slow go but it has been very successful, I still have quite a ways to go and still have to develop a technique for around trees, so far I've clipped them off of the trees and attacked with the pickaxe only.
