How do you know a car is a good car?

Answer

Historically, Japanese cars are the most relliable although even the domestic automakers are making better cars now.Having said that the Japanese will always be ahead of GM,Ford etc because the japanese automakers redesign their models every 3 to five years while makers like GM will milk a model line for up to 10 or 12 years (Cavalier and sunfires are a perfect example of this). Then only makes slight improvements on a model that is a poor handling, has no torsional rigidity (resistance to twisting, like a shoe box with no lid)unrelliable and has worn out swith gear, suspension and interiors.I always tell people that your better off with a 20 year old japanese car than you are with a 5 year old domestic car.Keep in mind there are alway exceptions and any car could be a potentially be lemmon (especially if the vehicle has not been looked after or maintained properly)but the odds are far better with an import vehicle.A simple test drive can tell you a lot about a car though, here is a few thing to look at. -Does the car drive/brake staight if your hands are not on the wheel? -Does the car make any noise over bumps or when braking or turning sharply? -Is there excessive play in the steering wheel? -How does the oil and or trans fluid look on the dipstick? -What condition is the paint in and is there overspray on mouldings etc? -Is there any smoke from the exhaust when accelerating? -Does everything work inside the vehicle, try everything -Are the tires wearing evenly, check inflation of tires or suspension may need a wheel alignment or replacement of components may be needed.

Once you find a good car that suits your needs and will continue to in the near future you should have a mechanical inspection done by an independant mechanical shop that you trust and has a good reputation before making a purchase.I hope this helps.Good luck
