If you have a bad ECM then your van will simply not run right. It may lose power, stall out, be sluggish, and running poorly. If you think you ECM is bad, simply go to the junk yard and get one off of an 87-1995 astro, but make sure you are taking off of your type of motor.
To fing the ECM go to the passenger side of the car and above the wheel you will see a cover, take the cover of and take the two small 7mm bolts off of the plastic that hold ECM in tight. Gently take out ECM disconnect wires and install new one.
You must drive the van around for a little bit in order for it to set. If problem is fixed them you are good to go, if not then you need to further diagnose it. It could be somethng with the distributor it's self or the injectors...check the wiring and insure there is no kinks and everything is connected proprerly.

There are a few things that could cause an 87 Chevy Astro to idle high when it is started and warmed up. It could be a bad fuse, a leak in the vacuum, or an issue with the throttle.

The sending unit is probably bad, not unusual.
Alternator is going out? battery is going bad?
Could have a head gasket problem. Need to know what color smoke is coming out of exhaust. If the smoke is white and has a sweet smell to it, you have a bad head gasket or a cracked head or both.

You can tell if the transmission, in your 1998 Chevy Malibu, is going bad. If there is a whining or clunking noise. The transmission might cause your engine to install when you are stopped with your foot on the brake.
