When it dies of natural causes, it's old.

A veterinarian or experienced pet store employee could you give you some idea of a hamster's age from its fur (which changes color and can become thin and brittle with age). But not any closer estimate than to within a few months to a year.

You can't actullay tell how old a rat is, but if you rats fur is soft. The rat is young. If the rats fur is rough, then... well play with your rat as much as possible. Take videos and picture. You rat is old and will die soon.

It is difficult considering they dont live for a long time but you can tell if its young or old by getting a vet to look at it's teeth. if its old obivously it has more worn down teeth. a younger rat will generally be more active too. hope i helped.
