How do you tell a gender of a praying mantis?

The difference between a male and female praying mantis is that the female is larger and the abdominal is larger than a males abdomanal.
Adult female Mantises are larger than adult males. That's one way to tell them apart. Quote from the Related Link: "The abdomen of the mantis has several segments. The male mantis, which is usually smaller than the female, has eight segments in its abdomen. The female has only six. The female also has a tube called an ovipositor for laying eggs."

Females are much bigger and fatter than a male mantis. Also you can look under it's abdomen and count how many lines are on it. If there are six lines then it's a female. But if theres more then its a male.

If it is a Chinese or European, after molt 3 it should be easy to tell. You could 1. Look at its size compared to another of the same molt (rather uneffective) 2. Look at it from above. If it is streamlined, narrow, and defined it is a male, if it is wider and more ovalur it is a female. 3. Flip it upside down or go under it and count the segments including the first one where the legs are slightly covering. 6-7 = female, and 8= male (favorite).
